Long-range shooting is both rewarding, and challenging. Shooting long distances requires a combination of marksmanship, knowledge of ballistics, and proper equipment. Whether you are “shooting for” Precision Rifle Competition (PRS), Hunting, or just wanting to have some fun at the rifle range, understanding the fundamentals is key to success.

So how far is “long-range”? Distances exceeding 300 yards and well beyond 1,000 yards!

First and foremost, you will need to choose the correct caliber for your desired distance. There are so many options, each with it’s own advantages and trade-offs. Some popular choices in the precision shooting community are the .243 Winchester and other 6mm projectiles, which offer a good balance of velocity, recoil, and ballistic efficiency. 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7mm, .308 Win Mag are all suitable calibers for going the distance.

Having the proper equipment for long-range shooting is critical. Here are a few things to consider:
